Women in Battle

The soldier in the body bag
wore a tampon
a monthly reminder she could give life
in battle fatigues
a lady dressed to kill
and be killed
neat and clean and pressed
except for the mess
on her chest
where her heart shattered
defending the American Way
of life.
Aren't
Women always complaining of broken hearts?

Published in Kalliope, Vol. XIII, No.2
